What is the difference between PHP and IOP Levels of Care?

Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHPs) and Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOPs) are both types of mental health treatment programs, but they differ in terms of the level of care and support they provide.

Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHPs)

A PHP is a more intensive level of care than an IOP. It is typically for individuals with serious mental health conditions that require a high level of support and structure in a less restrictive setting than inpatient hospitalization. PHP’s are a full-day program that usually runs for five hours daily five days per week. A PHP program will involve group therapy sessions, individual counseling, and medication management, as well as other therapeutic activities such as art or music therapy.

Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOPs)

An IOP program, on the other hand, is a less intensive level of care than a PHP. It is typically for individuals who have made progress in treatment and are able to manage their symptoms with less intensive support. IOPs typically meet for 3 hours per day, 3 to 5 days per week, and may include group therapy, individual counseling, and medication management. These programs are designed to help individuals maintain their progress and continue to improve their symptoms and overall functioning.
